Newman Summer Day Camp!

"I never knew that I had a budding Hollywood director in my child, but "studio" and "Stop Motion Animation" brought out new talents in my son. He loved the chance to be so creative!"

+ Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the questions you may have. Please contact us for more information!

How does swimming work at Day Camp?

We are proud to partner with Nu Wave Swim Club to provide both individualized instruction and free swim opportunities for our campers. Please see the Activities page for more details.

Is there a nurse on campus?

Newman has a Health Center on campus, which is staffed by a certified nurse or athletic trainer during camp hours. Should your child have a tummy ache or just need a little TLC, there is always a bed to lie down on.

Tell me a little about your staff.

We believe that we have the most qualified and dedicated day camp staff around. Adults with teaching experience supervise each age group and oversee every activity. Counselor support is provided by carefully selected college students, graduate students, and young professionals. Staff members are hired based on the unique skills and talents that they bring to camp. We have artists, musicians, programmers, athletes, and performers—all of whom take great pleasure in sharing their talents with children. In addition, we are proud of our low camper-to-counselor ratio, which affords each child the opportunity to receive individualized attention on a daily basis.

Where is Day Camp held?  What are the facilities like?

Newman Summer Day Camp is held on the campus of Isidore Newman School, which is located in the heart of uptown New Orleans. Facilities we use include an indoor pool, two gyms, a computer lab, a library, multiple playgrounds, a football field, a teaching kitchen, and a state-of-the-art dance studio.

In addition, during the summer, Day Camp converts regular classrooms into specialized environments: a video production studio, two digital photography labs, a tech lab for robotics and programming, and a stop motion animation studio. Plus, we utilize the Lower School’s two art studios, two science labs, and music room.

How is choice incorporated into my child’s day?

Summer belongs to kids, and therefore Newman Summer Day Camp is built around the idea of choice. We empower children to take ownership of their camp experience. Of course, we know that this has a different meaning for an 8th Grader than it does for a Kindergartner, and so we tailor our programs to meet their developmental needs. Electives are a key part of the Day Camp schedule; while an older camper’s day is made up almost entirely of electives and choices, our youngest campers enjoy a more structured day, but still with an element of choice built in. To see how this might work for your child, please see our sample schedules below.

When does my 1st-8th Grader sign up for activities?

At Newman Summer Day Camp, we move at the speed of kids. Minutes before each elective block begins, all 1st-8th Grade campers meet with their counselors to sign up for their next activity. This allows campers to fully control the flow of each day at Camp. However, for those planners out there, elective schedules are available online prior to the start of each week.

Because of our flexible staff and incredible facilities, campers never have to worry about being turned away because an activity is full. There is no such thing as a “Maximum Capacity” at Newman Summer Day Camp.

What about all those day-to-day details that aren’t included here?

You must mean sunscreen, carpool, early pick-up, special events, and all those other Day Camp details. Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. A document called “Important Information” will be available to you shortly after you register.
