Eve Lazovitz
Eve LazovitzDay Camp Director

Eve Lazovitz—or Miss Laz as she is known to students and campers—has been at Newman for six years. In addition to serving as the Director of Newman Summer Day Camp, Eve teaches Humanities—English and Social Studies—to Newman fifth graders. She is passionate about opening students’ minds to the world outside New Orleans and sharing her love of reading with students and teachers alike. Originally from New Jersey, Eve has her B.A. in English from Dartmouth and her M.A. in Middle Childhood Education from the Bank Street College of Education. She taught seventh and eighth grade Humanities in Brooklyn before making the move to New Orleans. She loves New Orleans and can often be found strolling the streets of Uptown with her daughter Ruby and English Cocker Spaniel Clio.


Alex SmithDirector of Newman Plus

Alex Smith has been at Newman since 2008 and currently serves as the Director of Newman Plus, overseeing the After 3, Newman at Night, and Newman Summer programs. Alex graduated in 1995 from London Guildhall University with a Certificate of Higher Education in Business Studies. He has worn many hats since arriving at Newman in 2008 including After 3 instructor; Day Camp Head Counselor and Media Lab Head; Day Camp Assistant Director; and most recently Summer Director. Prior to working at Newman he was an artist manager, a recording artist, a tour/production manager, and held several other positions in the music industry. While at Newman, he has designed and developed many new and exciting opportunities, promoted the program in our school community and beyond, and implemented many of the logistical and strategic aspects that have made Newman Summer a place that children are inspired to learn and grow while having fun and building new friendships.


Monita Thomas
Monita ThomasAssistant Director of Day Camp

Monita Thomas has been at Newman for fourteen years working in early childhood. Currently a Pre-K teacher, Mrs. Thomas returns for her sixth summer with Newman Summer and has worked in different capacities at camp, including counselor, Pre-K/K age group head, and Assistant Director. She is a dedicated educator who enjoys mentoring young people in her field and helping students grow, learn, and reach their full potential. Mother of three lifelong Greenies, Mrs. Thomas can often be found in the stands cheering on Newman's athletes.


Katy Van de PutteAssistant Director of Newman Plus

Originally from Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, Katy earned her B.A. in English with Creative Writing from Albion College. Katy joined the Newman community in early 2012 as a counselor in the After 3 program and rolled right into Newman Summer as an Assistant Age Group Head for 1st and 2nd grades. She now works full time in the Newman Plus office, which oversees After 3, Newman at Night, and Newman Summer. Katy is passionate about creating and contributing to extraordinary programming for students and families and looks forward to Newman Summer all year long!
