Eve Lazovitz—or Miss Laz as she is known to students and campers—joined the faculty at Newman in 2009. In addition to serving as the Director of Newman Summer Day Camp, Eve teaches Humanities—English and Social Studies—to Newman fifth graders. She is passionate about opening students’ minds to the world outside New Orleans and sharing her love of reading with students and teachers alike. Originally from New Jersey, Eve has her B.A. in English from Dartmouth and her M.A. in Middle Childhood Education from the Bank Street College of Education. She taught seventh and eighth grade Humanities in Brooklyn before making the move to New Orleans. She loves New Orleans and can often be found strolling the streets of Uptown with her daughter Ruby and English Cocker Spaniel Clio.
Alex Smith has been at Newman since 2008 and currently serves as the Director of Newman Plus, overseeing the After 3, Later Gators, The Spirit Store, and Newman Summer. Alex graduated in 1995 from London Guildhall University with a Certificate of Higher Education in Business Studies. He has worn many hats since arriving at Newman in 2008 including After 3 instructor; Day Camp Head Counselor and Media Lab Head; Day Camp Assistant Director; and Summer Director. Prior to working at Newman he was an a recording artist, a tour/production manager, artist manager, and held several other positions in the music industry. While at Newman, he has designed and developed many new and exciting opportunities, promoted the program in our school community and beyond, and implemented many of the logistical and strategic aspects that have made Newman Summer a place that children are inspired to learn and grow while having fun and building new friendships.
Tova Steele is thrilled to be expanding her role at Newman in 2019 as the Newman Plus Coordinator. She has been working with children for over eight years, four of which were as a part-time After 3 employee. Tova holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Early Childhood Education from Tulane University. Through this program she completed such coursework as Emergent Literacy, Child & Adolescent Literature, and Classroom Management, while working in various charter schools in New Orleans as a student teacher. A native of Seattle, she explored alternative auxiliary programs at the social justice focused Giddens School before moving back to New Orleans. She is excited to embrace this new position by creating innovative, empowering auxiliary programming for the students at Newman. Tova looks forward to bringing her favorite After 3 activity to Pre-K/K students with Little Innovators! In her free time, Tova is a stage manager for local theater companies and enjoys biking around the city.
Brandy Ciolino brings a wealth of experience to Newman Summer Day Camp having worked many roles at camps over the past twenty years. She joined Newman Summer in 2014 and the faculty at Newman in 2016, teaching Kindergarten. Brandy enjoys helping children succeed in their growth and learning through encouragement and a positive environment. Originally from New Orleans, she earned her B.A. in Political Science from Louisiana State University and has her teaching certification from the University of New Orleans. Brandy taught Kindergarten through third grade for ten years in Jefferson Parish prior to coming to Newman. She loves sports, outdoors, and spending time with her family.
Newman Summer Day Camp Counselors are the cornerstone of what makes camp a great experience for each camper. Our counselors bring an enthusiasm for experiential learning, the ability to foster strong connections with campers, and the knowledge that teamwork makes the dream work. Each camp counselor arrives with a unique set of skills that are adaptable to the camp environment; with everything from knowledge of beadwork and sewing to a passion for culinary adventures and technological prowess, Day Camp Counselors help our campers dive deep into new activities. All Newman Summer counselors are of college age or above and exhibit good character and integrity. Our extraordinary counselors help campers stay safe, engaged, and active, both physically and mentally. They are positive role models who set a good example for campers and other staff members alike.
