Baseball

BaseballAt baseball camp, players will receive in-depth instruction and extensive drill work in all phases of the game of baseball. Camp participants will be exposed to base-running, pitching, fielding, and hitting drills in small groups with a coach at every station. There will be presentations by former college coaches and players, as well as many games and practice competitions.

Basketball

BasketballThis camp focuses on the fundamentals of basketball. We teach individual skills through station work, incorporating a mix of competitive enthusiasm while meshing individual skill development into team play in both 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games.


Tracy Blackerby, Newman Head Girls Basketball Coach, MS Volleyball Coach, MS Softball Coach
Coach Blackerby, a Newman graduate (’06), attended Tulane University where she received her Bachelors of Public Health (’10) and Masters of Public Health (’11). After completing her Masters, she volunteered as an Americorps Member teaching health education in the New Orleans Metro area. She returned to Newman in the 2013-2014 school year to teach Physical Education in the lower school, as well as coach Girls’ Basketball, Volleyball, and Softball. In Coach Blackerby’s third year at Newman, she restarted the Girls’ Basketball Program in the Upper School.

Football

FootballJoin Newman Head Football Coach Nelson Stewart, his coaching staff, and players for a camp that uses individual instruction, group instruction, and competition to strengthen a player’s skills. As a former Newman Greenie football player, Coach Stewart is proud to share his passion and excitement for football with all football camp participants. Players will receive individual instruction with special emphasis on basic skill development, drill work, film review, and team games. Players will also compete in games that require the use of individual skills as well as promoting teamwork and competition. This is a no contact camp that only requires shirts, shorts, and athletic shoes. We will wear no pads or helmets during our sessions during the summer. We welcome players at all levels and only require each player come to camp with a positive attitude and a desire to work hard.

Nelson Stewart, Newman Head Varsity Football Coach
Former Newman ('95) and Tulane University ('99) football player, Coach Stewart enters his 16th year at Newman and is in his 9th year as head varsity football coach, after previously serving as offensive line coach for the previous 5 seasons. Over the past 8 seasons, the Greenies have gone to the playoffs each season, twice have been district champions, and twice district coach of the year. This past season the Greenies went 9-2 and achieved their first ever state #1 ranking. This will be his 7th year running the Newman Summer Football Camp. He has also served as a member of the Manning Passing Academy staff the past 7 years. Has also served as head coach for Orleans parish in the Lake Pontchartrain All Star game (defeating Jefferson parish 28-19 in 2013), along with twice serving as offensive coordinator.

Lacrosse

LacrosseThis camp will focus on age appropriate individual skill development, understanding of team concepts, and overall appreciation for the game of lacrosse. Campers will receive significant direct lacrosse instruction from the Newman coaching staff as well as current varsity players. The camp day will include opportunities to play the game in a friendly atmosphere with a bit of healthy competition and constant coaching. Our goal is to inspire and teach as many kids in our area to play the game we love as possible.

Aaron Burns, Newman Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach
Coach Aaron Burns is a native New Orleanian who grew up in College Park, Maryland from the ages of 3 to 18. He began playing lacrosse in the 2nd grade and has played ever since. He was a Varsity Captain at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland his sophomore through senior years where he was named first team all Maryland Independent Lacrosse League twice. After high school, Coach Burns followed an academic scholarship to University of Georgia where he was a 4-year starter on the UGA club lacrosse team, winning the SELC League championship as a Senior. Since returning to New Orleans, Coach Burns has worked as the lead PE teacher and Athletic Director at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. He has also been a coach for the U15 and later JV Carrollton lacrosse teams, and is currently the first head coach of the Newman Varsity Lacrosse Team. Coach Burns has individually trained players from 8-year-old beginners to varsity starters for the last three years. He is an enthusiastic and energetic coach that enjoys teaching the concepts and values of lacrosse above all else.

Newman Football Passing Camp

Newman Football Passing CampThe Newman football passing camp will focus on developing the fundamentals of quarterbacking and playing wide receiver. We will emphasize footwork, releases, and understanding the passing game. Our daily activities will involve drills, film review of our past teams, and board work. We will also film our campers and use our state-of-the-art video equipment in our new locker room. We look forward to using our technology, experience, and enthusiasm for the game of football.

Soccer

SoccerNewman Varsity Soccer Coach, Lynsey Winkler, welcomes players of all skill levels to participate in this exciting camp. Campers will focus on both the technical and tactical aspects of the game. Players will work on developing individual technique and ball mastery through organized drills, as well as improving game understanding and decision making through small-sided games and activities. Players will also compete in games to promote teamwork and competition.

Lynsey Winkler, Head Girls Varsity Soccer Coach
Lynsey Winkler is in her second year with Newman’s girls’ soccer program. As assistant coach last season, the Greenies were State Runner-Up and went undefeated in their district. Lynsey played four years at Spring Hill College and one season in the WPSL Women’s Amateur soccer league for F.C. St. Louis. She holds a USSF Class F coaching license as well as a NSCAA Goalkeeping Level 1 certification.

Softball

SoftballNewman Summer Softball Camp provides an opportunity for campers to learn the fundamentals of softball through skill-building stations, small group drills, and fun-filled competition. Campers will be exposed to every facet of the game – hitting, fielding, base-running, and pitching – through instruction and demonstrations provided by Newman Coaches and camp counselors! We look forward to a week filled of learning, competing, making new friends, and a whole lot of fun!

Tennis with Abrie du Ploy Tennis Academy

Tennis with Abrie du Ploy Tennis AcademyDirected by certified tennis professionals, this camp is catered to beginner-intermediate players who are looking to have fun and learn the game of tennis. Using the Quick Start format with station training, campers will learn all the basic strokes and incorporate those strokes with fun-oriented games. Campers will learn to score and will receive materials regarding tennis tips and history. All equipment will be provided. This camp will take place outside on the turf field. Campers will have regular water breaks throughout the mornings.

Hassan Abbas, Tennis Camp Director
Coach Hassan ranked in the top 20 junior players in England. He played Played Division 1 and NAIA. Hassan is USPTR Pro Certified and holds a Quick Start proficient certificate. He currently serves as Head Pro at the Abrie du Plooy Tennis Academy- Junior development and as Newman's After 3 tennis instructor.

Track and Field

Track and FieldThe Track and Field week at Newman Summer Sports Camp will allow campers with the opportunity to develop the physical skills of sprinting, middle distance and distance running as well as some of the throwing and jumping events involved in track and field. The week will provide a challenging, positive and supportive experience where hard work and determination will be encouraged and celebrated. The week will culminate with a track meet at City Park’s practice facility across from Tad Gormley Stadium.

Mark Faliveno, Newman Head Girls Track Coach
Coach Faliveno, Coach Faliveno has been the Girls’ Head Coach since 2009 and the Boys’ since 2014. In that time, the girls have won six District Championship, one Regional Championship, one State Runner-Up and one State Championship. In 2014, the Boys’ team took home a District and Regional Championship.

Volleyball

VolleyballNewman Summer Volleyball Camp is an exciting and fun-filled week designed for both beginner and intermediate players to develop the basic skills and knowledge of the game of volleyball. The camp will consist of drills and exercises that focus on passing, setting, hitting, and serving, as well as basic volleyball rules and terminology. Each day, each athletes will have the opportunity to test out their skills in game-based drills and daily scrimmages. The goal of the camp is to stimulate a love for the game in young athletes by showing them how to succeed while laying the foundation for their development with strong fundamental skills.
